In the book Sangeet Ratnakar written by Pandit Sharangdev, the definition of Indian music has been stated as Geetam, Vadayam and Nrityam Trayam Sangeetmuchyate. The word music includes all the three arts of singing, playing musical instruments and dancing. Despite being independent arts, all three complement each other. There are two types of Indian music, first is Carnatic music, which is popular in South Indian states and Hindustani music is popular in the rest of India. Music has had great importance in all the civilizations of India. Music has been prevalent in religious and social traditions since ancient times. In this form, music is considered the soul of Indian culture. In the Vedic period, spiritual music was called Margi and folk music was called Deshi. Over time, this is visible in the form of classical and folk music. In the Vedic period, the mantras of Samveda were chanted with the use of all seven notes according to the Vedic Saptak or Samagaan of that time. |
